About the Program
Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) partners with parents to prepare their children for success in school. HIPPY, designed for those aged 2 to 5, is a partnership with the Jasper City Board of Education and the Walker County Board of Education. It provides in-home instruction to help prepare children to be successful in school.
HIPPY is an evidenced-based program that works with families in the home to support parents in their critical role as their child's first and most important teacher.
Research has found that 84.8 percent of HIPPY kindergartners were rated as "ready for school" by their teachers. In addition, it shows that HIPPY kindergartners had higher attendance rates, higher prekindergarten enrollment, and higher promotion to first grade compared to other kindergartners. Also, HIPPY third graders scored significantly higher on a state-mandated math achievement test than their matched peers.
HIPPY strengthens communities and families by empowering parents to actively prepare their children for success in school. Parents are provided with a set of carefully developed curriculum, books and materials designed to strengthen their children's cognitive skills, early literacy skills, social/emotional and physical development.
Materials, supplies, curriculum, and activities are all provided FREE!
Twenty years of research conducted in the United States and either other countries have shown the HIPPY model to be effective in improving school readiness, parent involvement, school attendance, classroom behavior, and academic achievement for children participating in the program.
The Walker County HIPPY is accredited by HIPPY US. Funded has been provided through The Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education, The Daniel Fund, Jasper City Board of Education, The Walker Area Community Foundation, and the Walker County Board of Education.
